Throughout history, women have made remarkable contributions to the field of chemistry, often overcoming significant obstacles to advance scientific knowledge. On the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the PENGUIN project wishes to acknowledge the invaluable role these pioneering women have played in the development of chemistry.
Celebrating women who changed the world
🔬 Marie Curie: The quintessential trailblazer in science, Curie shattered glass ceilings as the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and the only person ever to claim Nobel honors in two different sciences. Her work on radium and polonium pioneered the study of radioactivity, impacting fields from medicine to physics.
🧬 Rosalind Franklin: The unsung heroine of DNA, Franklin’s X-ray diffraction images were key to decoding the double helix structure. Once overlooked, she is now revered as a cornerstone in molecular biology, her legacy reminding us of the critical contributions of women in science.
🔍 Dorothy Hodgkin: With a Nobel Prize to her name, Hodgkin’s mastery of X-ray crystallography revealed the structures of vital biomolecules. Her insights into penicillin and vitamin B12 have been instrumental in medicinal chemistry, improving countless lives.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science
These extraordinary women, among many others, have not only contributed to the wealth of knowledge in chemistry but have also served as role models for future generations of scientists. At the PENGUIN project, we draw inspiration from their tenacity and ingenuity, striving to embody their spirit of discovery in our work.
The contributions of women in science, especially in chemistry, are immeasurable, and on this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we recommit to fostering an environment where the brilliance and innovation of women can continue to thrive.
